When he wrote ‘La Calisto’, Francesco Cavalli(1602 – 1676) created an opera that is a unique mixture of mythological theatre, romance and Commedia dell’arte. The cast includes a whole regiment of Greek goddesses and demigods as well as satyrs. With ‘La Calisto’, the Venetian style of opera singing reached a new highpoint with regard to virtuosity and wealth of emotional expression. It is thus an ideal work for young singers who are on their way to enter the professional baroque opera stage. The cast of ‘La Calisto’ 2011 were selected from the participants in the Singing Competition for Baroque Opera Pietro Antonio Cesti at the 2010 Innsbruck Festival!
