OPERA2DAY & B'Rock Orchestra
150 years after its premiere, OPERA2DAY presents a revolutionary performance of the most beloved opera ever: Carmen. Bizet’s music will sound in all its glory during the first Dutch performance of the opera on period instruments performed by B’Rock Orchestra. Radiant centre of the performance is mezzo-soprano Tania Kross.
Bizet wrote Carmen in 1875, just after the turbulent period of the Paris Commune. An era of struggle for freedom and equality, but also a time of conservatism and fear. Georges Bizet, as a civilian soldier, experienced this turbulent period up close. In Carmen, he seems (unconsciously) to have incorporated much of this period.
In La révolution de Carmen, OPERA2DAY makes this hidden background of the work visible. The story is moved to the time surrounding the Commune. In which Bizet’s masterful music is provided with entirely new libretto. Coming to fruition is ‘the true story’ of Carmen. A performance that shows how polarisation can radicalise and even lead to civil war. In Amare, the performance becomes a total experience not to be missed.
