Masterclass at Conservatory Gent

B'Rock ft. conservatory students on scene

FRANZ SCHUBERT
Symphony 8, D 759, 'Unfinished'
Jakob Lehmann
Concert master

On 23 January, our musicians will guide the students of the Gent Conservatory will work with Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony. The intention of this masterclass is that the students learn to work on group sound and playing together. This master class is led by concert master Jakob Lehmann.

The symphony is unfinished because it consists of only two parts instead of four as is usual with symphonies. Schubert worked on the symphony in 1822. Why he stopped working on this composition is unknown. Schubert did, however, offer the two parts to the Steiermärkischen Musikverein in 1823, which may indicate that Schubert himself considered the work in two-part form to be complete. It initially fell into oblivion and only premiered on December 17, 1865, when Johann von Herbeck performed it in Vienna.

At 17:30 the masterclass will be concluded with a free concert in the MIRY concert hall. Feel free to come!
