Haydn & Mozart with Vox Luminis XL
A ‘who’s who’ of the early music world, so reads the line-up of this production. Not only is bass and artistic director of Vox Luminis Lionel Meunier at the helm, up front prizewinners Robin Johannsen, Sophie Junker and Florian Sievers share the spotlight.
This cast of all stars joins B’Rock for Michael Haydn’s Requiem – younger brother of – and Mozart’s Mass in c minor. The two monumental masses are like two sides of one coin, so well do they fit together. Both works are in the dramatic key of do minor, deeply lived and highly personal: Haydn’s Requiem is marked by grief after the loss of his daughter, his only child. Mozart’s famous Grosse Messe, in turn, is the only one he wrote not on commission, but on the occasion of his marriage to Constanze Weber.
What’s more: Michael Haydn’s influence on Mozart’s work is undeniable – not least on his own Requiem. Perhaps no coincidence, when you know that Mozart attended the first three performances of Haydn’s Requiem!
