Composers have given us magnificent beauty based on great suffering, and many masterpieces provide recurring moments for contemplation. In the music theatre project PASSIO, we meet ‘modern characters of the Bible’ who have become exemplary or iconic – their suffering being both heartbreaking and vital to remember.

The St John Passion that Alessandro Scarlatti wrote in 1685 is of exceptional beauty and rich in pathos and expression. Complemented with works by, among others, Pärt and Andriessen, the old and the new find each other in compelling rhythms and touching melancholy.

PASSIO includes numerous firsts: to underline the opera element of Scarlatti’s oratorio, we are presenting his St John Passion in a brand new semi-staged version. BRock harpsichord player Andreas Küppers will lead the BRock Orchestra and Vocal Consort. Muziektheater Transparant and director Luigi de Angelis will visualise the passion theme.

Coproduction: B’Rock Orchestra and Muziektheater Transparant, commissioned by Klarafestival

In the 21/22 season, B'Rock's artistic family member Cecile Broekaert will enter into an artistic dialogue with our productions, and translates our programmes into her own visual language, based on associations and triggers she encounters in our musical plans. This is the artwork that she made for Passio.
