Schubert's symphonies 2 and 4
B’Rock and René Jacobs are once again immersing themselves in the rich emotional world of Franz Schubert’s symphonies. The programme this time includes numbers 2 and 4, both early works that tack between joy and sorrow. The young Schubert here immediately demonstrated his skills. Beethoven was of course his main example, but Haydn also clearly influenced the noble introductions and Mozart the way he plays with texture and phrasing. Schubert wrote his 4th symphony, the ‘tragic’, at the age of nineteen. It is a rather sombre work that illustrates a turning point in his oeuvre. In this piece he seems to be turning his back on the classical and setting a course for the romantic. Between the two symphonies, renowned soprano and a born ‘Mozartian’ Sophie Karthäuser will perform a selection of Mozart’s most celebrated arias such as ‘Bella mia fiamma’ and ‘Ch’io mi scordi di te?’.
