Laughter and weeping at any hour...
It’s been a long time since B’Rock was nothing but a baroque orchestra. In recent years it has also gained ground in the classical, romantic and contemporary repertoires. Time for a new challenge: performances of Schubert’s complete symphonies, conducted by René Jacobs. This long-term project starts with the first and sixth symphonies – a youthful pairing in which Schubert both honours and emulates the illustrious legacy of his Viennese predecessors. Mozart’s tunefulness, Haydn’s inventiveness and Beethoven’s transcendent aspirations: Schubert absorbed and transformed them into his unique and generous style. He threads together timeless melodies and irresistible rhythms with apparent ease. First he envelops the orchestra in chivalrous sunbeams, then shrouds them in clouds of Sturm und Drang. The first and sixth symphonies by this master orchestrator are alternated with arias by Mozart performed by the soprano Robin Johannsen.
