Which is the best instrument to express feelings?
Of all the arts, it is music that is most able to move us. Music goes straight to our heart. But why? And how? Is the human voice the best instrument with which to express feelings? Or is it the virtuoso violin? Or is it the dulcet tones of the bassoon that touches us most deeply?
We shall be finding out for you with the aid of two virtuoso musicians: the Russian violinist Dmitry Sinkovsky and the Italian mezzo-soprano José Maria Lo Monaco. Together we shall immerse ourselves in the wealth of emotion of baroque music.
The first part of the programme is devoted to Antonio Vivaldi. It opens with the overture to the opera L’Olimpiade and is followed by a concerto for bassoon, a concerto for violin (Il Sospetto) and three moving arias from Il Farnace, Juditha Triumphans and Andromeda liberate, in which the voice dialogues with the solo violin. The second part is devoted to that other great master of baroque music, George Frideric Handel. We shall be playing a Sonata a cinque with a striking violin solo, and twee renowned arias from Ariodante and Rinaldo.
