While Antonio Vivaldi is a synonym for ‘concerto’, Roel Dieltiens is a synonym for ‘cello’. A concert programme that combines both starts with a premise that is as self-evident as it is appealing. ‘The concerto RV401 alla rustica ‘ proves that Vivaldi also mastered the colours and technical possibilities of the big brother of his beloved violin. Within a subdued palette, the soloist and orchestra create unique nuances: drama and energy contrasted with serenity and resignation. The darker tones of the first two movements are lightened in the concluding Allegro. Virtuoso flashes and irresistible vitality inject bright splashes of colours into Vivaldi’s musical canvas. The two-century younger ‘String quartet in 4 parts’ by American John Cage – rewritten for the B’Rock’s Baroque strings – is the result of a conscious and quirky choice of sonorities. No swaying cellists or shadow tints for Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: his ‘cello concerto is A’ shining example of virtuosity, emotional strength, lyrics and drama!
