Painting with sounds
Antonio Vivaldi painted with sounds. His mission was to strike the listener amidships with music that is so evocative that it is almost palpable. In the violin concertos that make up Le Quattro Stagioni, a great variety of scenes pass in front of the mind’s eye, from barking dogs and dancing nymphs to a storm and a shower. The violin narrates and illustrates; at first subdued, then acrobatic, often extremely humorous. Also Georg Friedrich Händel’s and Arcangello Corelli’s concerto grossi conjure up a wide range of human emotions.
