Schubert and Mozart
Love and death, no topics more prevalent in music than these two – and if possible, in causal relation. It is no different in this program. Indestructible love and a devilish deal are the ingredients of Der Freischütz, the very first great romantic opera. And as befits an opera, the swirling overture forms the clenched recipe for what is to come.
Seamlessly, three Mozart arias connect to it. In the composer’s most sensitive works, German soprano and absolute specialist of the genre Christiane Karg sings of love and sorrow.
No shortage of drama after intermission either. Schubert’s last complete symphony is as grand in scope as it is in musical richness. Innovative ideas, compelling melodies, a structure that stands like a house and emotional contrasts that make you gasp. Schubert’s Ninth contains it all; what else did he have to add? Venga la morte!
