Elise Christiaens

Double bass

Elise grew up in Escanaffles: a small village with 4 streets, a bakery, a butcher and a school on the Scheldt run by 2 nuns. “Especially as a teenager I really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the nature, the hours of cycling and running.” On the other hand, Elise very quickly understood that music was going to be her future: “And in my village, except for the choir consisting of the 2 nuns and a few screaming old ladies, very little was happening musically. Very frustrating at times.”  Her decision to play double bass was an easy one: “The bass is the foundation of all music, it carries the others, it is the crust of the pizza. Take it away, and the music will feel empty. It is incredibly important, but is never in the foreground, which is exactly what I like so much about it.” Elise has experienced countless beautiful concerts, memories and travels with B’Rock. “If I had to choose just one project, I would go for Orlando. I myself am a big fan of Handel’s Italian operas and the Italian language. I enjoyed each concert, with goose bumps and all!” When Elise is not performing, she secretly – not anymore – takes electric bass lessons at the music school in Ghent. “It is incredibly enriching to step into that other world and play everything from Marcus Miller to traditional jazz standards. Fun and Rock ‘n Roll.”
