As a child, Sara lived in Fairbanks, Alaska. “I loved growing up there. It was a friendly community and a beautiful place, despite the long, cold winters”. Her parents were both music teachers: “our house was full of music, and I of course wanted to join in!” She enjoys the different sounds and affects you can create with the violin. “Plus the repertoire is incredibly rich: my mother who plays clarinet always told me that she envies that”.
“With B’Rock there is often a feeling of being on the edge or the limits of something”, says Sara. “Trying to find connections or contrasts between repertoires, styles, forms. Sometimes it feels perilous!” One of her favourite productions is Songs of War, which combined music by Monteverdi, Locke, and Heiner Goebbels, text by Gertrude Stein, and video interviews with war refugees. “All of these disparate elements came together to form a powerful and sobering message. For me, reading the texts – something we musicians aren’t often asked to do – was challenging and fascinating”. When not making music, Sara loves to swim in beautiful places.
