Culture is under pressure everywhere, and invariably independent players are the first to be hit. When Berlin’s culture senator Joe Chialo recently announced he would slash his budget by over 12% – 130 million less from 1 January! – Konzerthaus Berlin also suffered a sharp cut.
At such short notice, a house can only do one thing: chop external programming. That means a brutal end for the festival Projections, a ‘highlight of the 2024/2025 season’. Innovative programs by progressive ensembles and soloists, artistically interesting, so exactly where a concert hall or festival can make the difference.
B’Rock was supposed to play ANNO by and with composer-performer Anna Meredith at Projections on 12 February ‘25. That concert and its rehearsal days are now simply gone. The 1.8 million that the Konzerthaus has to urgently cut will thus first hit our musicians, and all the independent artists involved. #BerlinIstKultur reads the slogan at various Berlin houses…. for how much longer?
