With the ‘Coronation Anthems’ of Georg Friedrich Handel and Antonio Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’, Baroque Orchestra B’Rock and the outstanding Swedish Radio Choir created a musical gala with a golden rim. The ‘Coronation Anthems’ were written for the coronation of George II on 11 October 1727 and comprise four songs for orchestra, choir and soloists. ‘Let thy hand be strengthened’ rang out after the people had accepted the new monarch and the immortal ‘Zadok the Priest’ as he was anointed. ‘The King Shall Rejoice’ accompanied the actual coronation and ‘My heart is Inditing’ was played during the ceremony for the King’s consort. Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’ – buried for centuries under the dust of oblivion – is also one of the most popular pieces of the classical Baroque repertoire. Here the earthly realm is exchanged for the heavenly in a jubilation song honouring God Almighty. Vivaldi used an ingenious sequence of passages in concertato style, fugas, homophone statements, intimate duets and impressive choral sections to create an extremely varied musical universe.
