The Christmas Oratorio tells the story of the birth of Jesus in an epoch-making work with voice and orchestra. ‘Jauchzet, frohlocket’ – the angels proclaim the joy of this birth for mankind, and the shepherds who hear the message and see the Saviour praise the child who brings peace to the world in inspiring music.

Cantatas IV – VI are full of contrasts. The Magi want to visit Jesus, but have not reckoned with Herod, who wants to send them on the wrong track. Cantatas IV – VI span a solemn arc between brilliant enemy snorting and heartfelt solos before the light overcomes the darkness and the choral voices break out into a moving ‘Fallt mit Danken’.

Rejoicing (cantatas I – III) and redemptive victory over the darkness (cantatas IV – VI). Experience both concerts (or one of the two of your choice) live and in historical performance practice.
