"From the heart - may it go to the heart again" was Beethoven's creed for his monumental "Missa solemnis." Initially commissioned for his mecenas Archduke Rudolph's elevation to Cardinal Archbishop, it transcended mere ceremonial music to become a pinnacle of Beethoven's genius.

Handel's festive Water Music first sounded during a royal boat trip on the Thames. The date was 17/7/1717. According to The Daily Courant's account, George I and his aristocratic guests sailed in their royal boat from Whitehall Palace to Chelsea. About 50 musicians sailed along in a second boat and provided the soundtrack.

The Nederlands Kamerkoor traditionally ushers in the festive season with the jubilant sounds of the Weihnachtsoratorium, Bach's masterpiece for Christmas. With the choir, this work sounds, as the NRC described it last year, "clear as a cold gust of wind, crackling like the snow under your feet".
